The voices of our loved ones hold incredible power of us. I realized just how much when a friend of late brother said he had found a tape with my brother’s voice. Then the friend couldn’t find the tape. I wrote an essay about this for a magazine, and readers wrote back their own stories. It was somehow fitting. On the anniversary of my brother’s death on the Jewish calendar, I walked side by side with my mother up a South Carolina road.
When someone dies young, the loss is often doubly hard. Why? Because as mourners, we can’t help but wonder what might have been. In this post, I muse about what kind of father my late brother might have been. He died at age 23, having never had the chance at fatherhood. Continue reading
